The search for a hassle-free holiday is over
Hello, I am Vangelis and I would like to extend a very warm welcome to
all of you who are considering Villa Doti as a destination for their holidays
in Greece. Many things have changed for me since 1999 when Villa Doti
was completed and opened for our first guests. In 2001 I was diagnosed
with kidney failure and eventually in late 2003 I had to start
haemodialysis. Living in Athens 6 months a year and enjoying the luxury
of a haemodialysis centre very close to my home, I was more worried
about the rest of the year, when I am in Kalamos: how would this major
change in my health affect my lifestyle? How hard would it be for me to
perform my treatment while in Kalamos for 6 months? I soon
discovered that things were much simpler than I imagined!
I discovered that Volos is the home for Thessaliki Nosileftiki, a new,
state-of-the-art haemodialysis centre open to permanent residents and
tourists from all around the world. Volos is only 46km (roughly 1hr) from
Kalamos and I can either drive there myself or, when I do not feel like it, I
can call for an air-conditioned taxi to drive me to Volos and then take me
back again to Kalamos when I am done with my treatment. All associated
costs are fully reimbursed by my state insurance and this is the case for
all EU patients visiting Greece as tourists. Furthermore, there is a small
medical centre with a resident doctor in Argalasti, 6km from Kalamos,
which gives me great peace of mind should an emergency occur.
So now that I enjoy a hassle-free time away from Athens, Kalamos seems
much more beautiful! Having looked into other kidney patient holiday
destinations, the majority of them offer accommodation and treatment
under one roof. To me this causes the unpleasant feeling of "living in a
hospital" and hence spoils the relaxation a holiday is supposed to offer.
Villa Doti is very different: guests can make the best of Kalamos' relaxing
environment without having to worry about their treatment, which
remains a hassle-free routine, the way it should really be!
